Copays are the amount of money you have to pay every time you go to a doctor or pick up a prescription. Deductibles refer to an annual amount you have to cover before your insurance covers the rest of the costs. This amount is inversely related to the monthly premium you pay. For example, if you have a low monthly premium, you have a higher deductible, and vice versa. Your deductible amount should, likewise, be available on your card, your account online, or accessible by calling your insurance provider. 

This amount applies to any and all services you receive throughout the year. If you have already had appointments or services for other healthcare concerns, then you might have paid into your deductible. If it is the start of a new year and you haven’t had any other services, your full deductible might remain effective before the rest of your care is covered. 

However, the deductible might be a few thousand dollars compared to tens of thousands of dollars long-term for inpatient and outpatient care, so it can be a viable way to pay for treatment.
