What to Expect From a Residential Alcohol Rehab Program
Participating in an alcohol rehab program for the first time can be intimidating. No matter how much you want to overcome your addiction, not knowing what to expect can make you nervous.
Don’t let your feelings hold you back from taking back your life. Rehab programs are specifically designed to help people feel safe and supported.
Here’s what you can expect from a residential treatment program.
Step 1: Intake
You’ll start by completing an intake interview so staff can learn more about you. This information will be used to create a customized treatment plan for the duration of your stay. Residential programs typically last 1, 2, or 3 months.
When you have a choice, a 3-month program is recommended. Treatment lasting less than 90 days has been shown to have limited effectiveness.
Step 2: Detoxing and withdrawal
Once you’re in the program, you’ll start to detox. While you’re detoxing, you’ll probably experience withdrawal symptoms, although the severity will depend on how much alcohol your body is used to having in your system. Our detox center in Michigan is here to make this process easier.
Step 3: Therapy sessions
During your treatment, you’ll participate in a variety of therapy sessions to dive deeply into the roots of your addiction and uncover your triggers. With your triggers identified, you’ll learn how to eliminate them in a healthy way.
Learning about the roots of your addiction, and learning how to handle triggers will become a powerful tool to help you heal.
Step 4: Family counseling
Getting friends and family involved has been proven to improve alcohol rehab outcomes. Not all facilities offer family counseling, but many do, and it’s highly effective.
Your friends and family care about you, and have been deeply affected by your addiction. They’re struggling with you. Including them in therapy sessions can help you heal trauma and repair your relationships.
Step 5: Aftercare strategy
Once your treatment program is close to ending, you’ll work with a counselor to create a plan for your aftercare. This is important because it will take time to readjust to life in the absence of your addiction. Aftercare will support you in maintaining sobriety and avoiding a relapse.
Your aftercare might include moving into sober housing, continuing with therapy, or participating in local support groups.
Choosing Between Outpatient and Residential Alcohol Rehab for Alcoholism
Although both options can work, you’ll get a higher level of support from a residential treatment program compared to an outpatient program. Here’s what residential programs provide to make recovery easier:
A stress-free environment. Living in a stress-free environment will help you recover faster. No matter how simple your life is at home, daily stressors add up quickly and take a toll on your wellbeing. When you’re in recovery, you need as little stress as possible. You probably experience more stress at home than you realize. You have to cook, clean, work, manage your budget, and field phone calls. If you live with other people, or have a family, you have to deal with emotional ups and downs, disagreements, and solve problems. You won’t have to deal with those issues in a residential alcohol rehab program. All of your meals will be provided, and you won’t have to deal with the outside world. Without these stressors, it will be easier to focus on your recovery.
Medical staff on call 24/7. In a residential alcohol rehab program in Michigan, medical staff will be on call 24/7. This is especially important for the first few days of your recovery. You’ll start experiencing withdrawal symptoms within the first 6-12 hours. Alcohol withdrawal symptoms typically include headache and shaking, sweating, nausea and vomiting, anxiety, and insomnia. After the first 12 hours, you might start to experience additional, more severe withdrawal symptoms like seizures and hallucinations. These symptoms can be deadly.
No contact with enablers. In a residential alcohol rehab program, you won’t have any contact with the enablers in your life. Nobody can pop over and bring you a beer or break out a bottle of vodka and start drinking in front of you.
Being in a neutral environment reduces triggers. In a residential treatment center, you won’t experience the usual triggers that make you want to drink. For instance, if you’re used to coming home and relaxing on the couch with a drink, you won’t have that same routine at a rehab center.
Say Goodbye to drugs & alcohol for good
Are Finances and Obligations Holding You Back From Seeking Treatment?
For some people, residential treatment isn’t practical for two reasons: finances and personal obligations. If this applies to you, outpatient rehab might be your only option.
Financial Considerations for Making Your Choice
Residential alcohol rehab costs more than an outpatient program. If you’re on a tight budget, you might have no choice but to pursue outpatient treatment and that’s okay. Outpatient treatment has a high success rate, provided you make appropriate changes in your life to support your recovery. For example, you’ll need to set clear boundaries with friends and family regarding alcohol possession and consumption in the house. Find out if an ally, like your sponsor, can live with you while you go through treatment. There will be times when you’ll need someone to advocate for you when you can’t gather the strength to enforce your boundaries.
Personal Obligation Considerations
Some people can quit their job to go into a residential alcohol treatment program while a family member or spouse pays the bills. If you’re not in that position, you’ll need to choose an outpatient program.
Another consideration is your obligation to your family. Are you a caregiver? A single parent? Does anyone rely on you for their care? It’s worth trying to find someone to cover for you so you can go into a residential rehab facility.
